Comments: Baum's first book, all about -- raising chickens. First serialized in "The Poultry World" July-November 1882, (collected 1886). This is a technical handbook on chicken breeding. As a young man Baum raised Hamburg chickens and was extremely successful with them, eventually developing a new strain which won him a number of prizes at fairs and exhibitions; he also served as secretary of the New York State Poultry Association. |
