Comments:
Mr. Baum was married to Maud Gage, daughter of Matilda Joslyn Gage who was a radical feminist and Native American activist. His mother in law lived with them for several years in South Dakota. This demonstrates that he was a man of saintly disposition, immense good humor, and deep compassion. He is best known for writing “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” followed by a large number of other books set in Oz and surrounding areas. These books were the “Harry Potter” of his day. He also wrote a great deal under pseudonyms so he could write about other characters without disappointing his fans. He was a prolific author with a variety of successes. Many of his works, early plays, screenplays and similar material is lost. “The Wizard of Oz” continues to inspire theater and television today. Most of the radical feminist ideas in the book were edited out in the screenplay for the movie famously starring Judy Garland.
