Pelham Memorial High School created the Oz Writing Contest in conjunction with the community read of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” an event meant to bring the people of Pelham together to appreciate and discuss reading and writing. Riffing off the novel “Wicked,” the contest asked students to write a short story that explored a point of view from the original text and took the reader to a different place, a different time period or a different version of the story. The three winning short stories, which mix Oz mythology with very modern social and political concerns, are published in this collection. Find out if a flying monkey can get job in a world without a witch. How did the Wizard of Oz become the man he is? The third story portrays a mayor of Emerald City who doesn't like all the outsiders who have moved in from the Witch's castle. Can he kick them out?
