Comments: The Yellow Brick Road from Munchkin Land to the Emerald City was also wide enough to accommodate DC and Marvel as they produced their first ever joint publication. In fact, their shared adaptation of MGM's "The Wizard of Oz" would pave the way for many more future company cross overs. The 1939 classic movie, based on the novel by L. Frank Baum and starring Judy Garland, had enjoyed a resurgence in recent years, with repeated television airings and an upcoming toy launch. Such attention had not gone unnoticed by DC or Marvel, with both sides ready to compete with each other for publishing rights. Thankfully, brains, courage, and heart prevailed, as DC and Marvel executives agreed to collaborate on tabloid -sized, MGM - authorized treasury edition. Roy Thomas scripted a faithful, 72 page adaptation of Dorothy Gale's adventure, while John Buscema's artwork depicted the landscape of Oz in lavish detail. |
